Very Rare WW11 Elgin 22 jewel Deck Watch.
This is a very rare British specification 22 jewel B W Raymond deck watch made by Elgin Watch Co. in 1943. These were produced during WW11 specifically for the military and the majority were 24 hour pieces, i.e. the hour hand revolves once in 24 hours with an accompanying 24 hour dial. This one is to British and Canadian spec so the hour hand revolves in the conventional once in 12 hours with a conventional 12 hour dial.
The watch is a development of the very high quality 21 jewel B W Raymond railroad watch that has been adapted to run a centre seconds sweep hand rather than the more usual sub seconds dial. An extra jewel was added to support the seconds hand pinion which then raises the overall jewel count to 22. This watch has 21 jewels engraved on the movement plate as this was not changed to 22 jewels until later in production.
The watch is stem wind and stem set. Pulling the crown out to setting position activates the "Hacking" feature whereby the watch instantly stops. Returning the crown to "run" position immediately restarts the watch which allows for very accurate time setting and easy synchronising with other time pieces.
This particular watch is in fabulous "hardly used" condition. The movement is mechanically sound condition as it runs strong and keeps excellent time to better than +10 secs per day. The winding, setting, and hacking features all work smoothly as intended. Cosmetically please study the photos as it all looks good to me.
The original 3 piece base metal case is in as new condition, again please study the photos.
Similarly, an excellent 12 hour dial and steel spade style hands.
Overall an excellent example of this very rare timepiece that is working perfectly.
